Each
year
hundreds
of
thousands
of
adults
undergo
percutaneous
coronary
intervention
procedures
.
Historically
, the
most
common
approach
has been
through
the
femoral
artery
.
Newer
advances
have
proven
the
radial
approach
to be
more
beneficial
to
patients
,
drastically
reducing
bedrest
time
after
the
procedure
,
while
also
reducing
the
number
vascular
access
site
complications
(VASCs)
.
When
complications
do
occur
at the
access
site
,
nurses
are
more
able
to
identify
them
based
upon
visibility
of the
radial
access
site
.
Retroperitoneal
hemorrhage
is
a
common
complication
of the
femoral
approach
, and
identification
of this
complication
can
be
delayed
since
bleeding
cannot
be
easily
visualized
, as the
bleeding
occurs
in the
retroperitoneal
space
.
Research
evidence
supports
the
use
of the
radial
approach
, and the
benefits
of
reduced
VASCs
and
increased
patient
comfort
serve
to
decrease
length
of
stay
and
increase
patient
satisfaction
. In
order
to
encourage
implementation
of the
shift
from the
predominant
use
of the
femoral
to the
radial
technique
, a
three
month
trial
will be
conducted
comparing
VASCs
and
patient
comfort
in
adult
patients
undergoing
each
type
of
procedure
.
Data
will be
analyzed
against
chart
audits
from the
past
six
months
of
data
at
St
.
Elizabeth
Medical
Center
, and will
demonstrate
the
safety
and
efficacy
of the
change
. The
evidence
will be
disseminated
amongst
the
nursing
community
and the
stakeholders
to
guarantee
understanding
and
benefits
.
