Abdominal
surgery
is
one
of
most
common
surgeries
performed
today
. The
complications
of
such
a
surgery
can
be
devastating
.
PostOperative
Ileus
(POI)
is
a
common
complication
and
is
estimated
to
occur
in
up
to
25%
of
all
abdominal
surgeries
(Vather
&
Bissett
,
2013)
.
POI
causes
pain
,
discomfort
,
abdominal
distension
,
constipation
, and
can
extend
the
hospital
stay
costing
billions
of
dollars
annually
(Hiranyakas
,
et
al
,
2011
.

109)
. As
medical
professionals
,
it
is
our
job
to
facilitate
positive
outcomes
for
out
patients
. By
utilizing
resources
that were
unheard
of
just
10
years
ago
,
we
can
assist
in
reducing
time
spent
hospitalized
after
an
abdominal
surgery
.
Utiliziation
of
all
resources
available
;
fast
track
recovery
programs
and
medications
such
as
Alvimopan
,
we
can
decrease
the
occurrence
of
POI
and
facilitate
a
positive
outcome
for
post-abdominal
surgery
patients
.
Alvimopan
is
an
opioid
antagonist
that
reverses
many
unwanted
effects
of
opioids
without
affecting
centrally
mediated
analgesia
(Linn
,
&
Steinbrook
,
2007
.

27)
. This
article
discusses
the
steps
a
small
surgical
hospital
in
Arlington
,
Texas
is
taking
to
approve
and
establish
a
standing
set
of
orders
, for
all
postabdominal
surgery
patients
.
Included
in these
orders
is
the
use
of the
medication
Alvimopan
.
Alvimopan
has been
proven
to
decrease
the
occurrence
of
POI
by
44%
while
decreasing
the
length
of
hospitalization
for those with
diagnosed
POI
by
up
to
50%
(Hilton
,
et
al
,
2012
.

, and
diminishing
the
complications
associated
with an
extended
hospital
stay
.
