Description
Title
Anaphylaxis
in the
school
setting
.
Subject
Anaphylaxis
,
Adrenaline
;
Schools
.
Description
Evidence
is
mounting
that the
incidence
of
allergies
to
food
and
insects
, and the
incidence
of
anaphylaxis
in the
pediatric
population
has
risen
significantly
in
recent
years
. In
school
age
children
,
allergy
to
food
is
the
most
common
cause
of
anaphylaxis
. At
least
one
student
in
every
classroom
has a
history
of
food
allergies
.
School
nurses
are
well
equipped
to
provide
first
aid
in
anaphylactic
emergencies
,
however
school
nurses
are not
always
readily
available
, and
nursing
coverage
does
not
extend
before
and
after
school
hours
. For the
child
experiencing
an
anaphylactic
reaction
,
prompt
administration
of
epinephrine
can
mean
the
difference
between
life
and
death
.
School
personnel
have a
responsibility
to
care
for
students
in
life
threatening
emergencies
,
including
anaphylaxis
.
Unfortunately
,
studies
have
shown
schools
are
poorly
prepared
to
deal
with
allergic
emergencies
,
having
no
epinephrine
available
for
general
use
and
lacking
organized
programs
in
education
of
staff
in
recognition
and
management
of
anaphylaxis
.
Research
indicates
that
one
in
four
teachers
would
render
aid
in an
anaphylactic
emergency
.
Schools
need
to
empower
employees
to
act
by
addressing
fears
surrounding
epinephrine
administration
.
Implementing
school
wide
trainings
,
which
address
gaps
in
knowledge
and
practical
skills
,
can
increase
the
rate
and
decrease
the
lag
time
in the
administration
of
epinephrine
for
students
and
staff
who
experience
an
anaphylactic
reaction
in the
school
setting
. A
plan
utilizing
existing
technology
readily
available
in the
school
setting
,
accessing
free
teaching
materials
and
medication
, and
using
already
employed
school
nurses
to
train
employees
is
a
cost
effective
solution
.
Hands
on
learning
can
be
carried
out
during
regular
school
hours
and
lessons
educating
staff
on
allergy
and
anaphylaxis
can
be
completed
at
staff’s
convenience
.
